Google has announced its plans for merging YouTube Gaming with YouTube back in September 2018. Now, YouTube is officially pulling the plug on that standalone app in just a few days.

At this point, most of the people are already using the YouTube app for streaming games. The features from YouTube Gaming started migrating to the main YouTube app since last year. Google wants to keep everything in one place and that is the reason YouTube Gaming is shutting down

A brief message from Google’s support page on the topic reads:

The YouTube Gaming app will go away on May 30, but you’ll be able to find all of your favorite gaming videos in the YouTube main app at www.youtube.com/gaming. Learn more about Gaming on YouTube here

The latest update adds some convenient new options related to the video you’re watching, below your gallery of recommended videos. With these, it’s now easier than ever to Like or Dislike a video, share it with a friend, or save it to a playlist, all while staying immersed in YouTube’s fullscreen experience.

This new UI has rolled out widely on both stable and beta versions of YouTube, which indicates a server-side change. Update or download YouTube for Android by clicking on the button below.

Youtube, after a long time, finally brings the Dark Mode to the Android App. The feature was rolled out for iOS users back in March. Finally, this is also happening in the Android ass well.

Anytime soon, you might be treated with the introduction of the Dark mode in the app.

The new dark mode helps you to view the content in the dark, without the background straining your eyes in the dark. The color is, however, not completely dark.

Just in case, if you cannot get the message, just head to the Settings > General Tab. You will find the Toggle Key for Dark Mode sitting right there.

YouTube ReMix has been teased ever since last year, and as per some media reports, it was expected to be launched sometime in March 2018. Clearly, that didn’t happen, and now Google Play Music might just migrate entirely by year end.

YouTube ReMix is a great opportunity for the company to simplify its music and video services.

Google had announced the launch of its Google Play Music subscription service in India for Android, iOS and the web last year. It is priced at Rs 89/month with a 30-day free trial to users who wish to test drive the service before paying the monthly subscription.

Having dark theme helps in a number ways including saving battery life and going easy on the eyes. Youtube just joined the growing group of apps that have added the dark theme to their app.

To activate the mode, one needs to tap on the account icon and then go to the “Settings” section. Once there, select the “Dark Theme” and voila your app starts looking different. Currently, it’s rolling out on iOS and will arrive for Android in few days.

Android is a week or two old, and developers have already started making the Custom ROMs based on Android Oreo. My device, Redmi Note 3, got its Oreo Custom ROM too!

You can check if your device has a custom ROM based on Oreo at XDA.

One of the eye catching feature of Oreo is the PIP mode, that pops up a video window on to your screen and you can multi task. But for now it is available on for Youtube RED users, but you can follow my steps to enable it on normal Youtube App too!

Here is how you can enable it :

  • Download the Custom Navigation Bar app (free, with in-app purchases) on your device. (As setting it up can be a bit complicated, I have covered those steps below in this article.)
  • Install ADB drivers on your computer. For this, you can choose to download either Minimal ADB & Fastboot or the official Google binaries.
  • Enable USB debugging on your Android device. To do that, go to your phone’s Settings –> Developer options –> USB debugging, and toggle this on.
  1. Connect your phone to the PC after downloading Custom Navigation Bar. (Missed this part in the video)
  2. Download the ADB files and extract it.
  3. Enable USB Debugging in your phone.
  4. In the app, copy the command and click next. If anything pops up on your mobile’s screen. Click Yes or Okay.
  5. Now open Command Prompt in that ADB folder on the computer by pressing Shift + Right Click  on your keyboard. Here, execute the command ” adb devices “, and then, if asked, grant the permission on your phone.
  6. Once your device has ADB access, you can open the Custom Navigation Bar app on your phone. On the first screen, tap on “Get Started”. Now you will be required to grant a certain permission to your device. For that, execute the following commands on Command Prompt:
    adb shell
    pm grant xyz.paphonb.systemuituner android.permission.WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS
  7. When you enter the app, tap on “Navigation bar”. Here, when you scroll down, you’ll see “Type” under both “Extra left button” and “Extra right button”. Tap on either of these, and select “Keycode”.
  8. Now tap on “Keycode”, and select “Window”.
  9. There should now be a button at your specified location. But since you can’t see it yet, let’s assign it with an icon. For that, tap on “Icon”, and select any optionthat you like. (You can skip this step if you want.)

Now you can enjoy this feature by opening a video on Youtube and pressing the icon on your navigation bar.

Thanks!

Following on from Izzi’s earlier post, My 5 most improved Windows Phone apps of 2014 I thought I’d approach things from a different angle and take a look at the bad guys, app developers who in 2014 have neglected their offerings to the Windows Phone Store for whatever reason. You will notice in this top 5 Windows Phone apps in need of an update that none of them are paid for apps, so with that in mind we will begin.

5. Waze

9395b602-46d0-4d1f-a5cb-027450ac11e2

When Google took over Waze, the mapping app that lets you tip off other drivers of traffic jams and speed traps, it was quite a surprise to see it arrive on Windows Phone and looked like it could be the start of Google finally paying attention to Microsoft’s mobile platform. But alas, it wasn’t the case. It last got an update in February and doesn’t appear to be supported by the developers anymore. Will anything change in 2015?

4. LinkedIn

9ea69e92-35fd-4070-950e-ed940779f4c0

I recall when I first got into Windows Phone one of the big apps Microsoft boasted about having on board was LinkedIn, the Facebook of the business world. I didn’t use it then and still don’t now, however a lot of Windows Phone users do, so I am surprised to see it hasn’t received a single update in 2014. Come on LinkedIn, show us Lumia users some love.

3. YouTube

e7e1622c-3a74-4a58-9f02-828eebad4c68

YouTube for Windows Phone is a tale of what could have been. Back in August 2013 Microsoft had a great YouTube client, better than anything Google has produced for iOS or Android. But scared stiff of the competition cowardly Google blocked the app from working, depriving not only viewers the awesome experience but their own content producers of advertising revenue. Microsoft have gone back to offering a link to the mobile website and fortunately apps like MetroTube and MyTube fill the void. Let’s hope the new year see’s some agreement reached.

2. Instagram (Beta)
ef02bb1f-7af3-41df-bfbd-ec8ffa615314

For a long time Instagram was THE app that everyone complained was missing on Windows Phone, then in November 2013 it arrived! The problem was that it wasn’t finished, and for this reason it was labelled Instagram Beta, it was missing major features such as the ability to share video clips, but with the promise that new features were coming soon it was surely only a matter of time until The Beta tag was dropped right? Wrong! Over a year later and with no updates since March Windows Phone users are now wondering if it will ever be completed. But with Rudi Huyn’s excellent 3rd party offering, 6tag, showing them how it’s done there is at least some comfort for Windows Phone users who want a full Instagram experience.

1. Flickr

9586ae22-ab4c-4594-99c1-42031ac348bb

Windows Phone offers some of the best cameras available on a smartphone, so photo sharing is obviously a big deal to users, and Flickr, with the option to upload and view full resolution snaps is a great option, until you see the app. The fact it is still branded “Flickr for Windows Phone 7” hints at how bad Yahoo’s support of their app is. The fact it hasn’t been updated for a whole 33 months (yep, March 2012 was the last update) shows you why Flickr tops this list of Windows Phone apps most in need of an update. Again we must thank goodness for third party clients. Flickr Booth, by JC Mobile Solutions and Matt Cowen’s Flickr Central are both great and more than fill the void left by the official apps’ failings.

So there you have it. I think all Windows Phone users would join me in thanking the app developers of third party clients for filling in so many gaps. If you have any suggestions for apps that should be in this list let us know in the comments section. On the other hand if you want to see which developers have been improving their apps on Windows Phone in the last year, or suggest some your self check out Izzi’s post HERE.
