Microsoft are giving away a Lumia 640 in the latest #LumiaChallenge, where entrants are invited to share their most creative HyperLapse video and tweeting the link to your work along with the hashtag #LumiaChallenge to @LumiaVoices (formally Connects).

As the Conversations blog explains:

For this challenge, we’re shaking things up with Hyperlapse, the smoothest timelapse app out there. Hyperlapse takes your first-person videos and transforms them into smooth and stabilized time lapses, using technology that has been 20 years in the making. All you have to do come up with a great idea, film it with your Lumia, and select a speed. Hyperlapse takes care of the rest. So for this challenge, we want to experience the world through your lens, as you capture your adventures and tweak them for maximum coolness. The more creative and exciting the better, so put on your thinking cap and start filming the world around you.

You can download Hyperlapse from the Windows Phone Store HERE and Conversations have also shared some of the entries so far for those after some inspiration, one of which can be seen below (tap/click image to play):

The Conversations blog, formerly Nokia Conversations has now changed it’s name to Lumia Conversations, as part of Microsoft’s transition of the Nokia team, responsible for the Lumia Windows Phone that we have all come to know and love, which they took over as part of the Devices and Services division purchased earlier this year.

The url has changed from conversations.nokia.com to lumiaconversations.microsoft.com, going to the former does however redirect you to the new site. We can also expect changes to the Facebook, Twitter and YouTube sites as well.

With Microsoft’s purchase of Nokia’s Devices and Services division, which completed earlier this year, the brand name Lumia, synonymous with Windows Phone, was part of the deal. Microsoft have been gradually moving Nokia products, smartphones specifically, from Nokia branding to Microsoft. The Conversations blog have interviewed Tuula Rytilä, Senior Vice President of Marketing for Phones at Microsoft to find out about this transition and how it affects current Lumia devices.

From the Conversations blog post:

Conversations: We have now started the transition from Nokia Lumia to Microsoft Lumia. Tell us about this change. What concrete changes are we going to see?

Tuula: This is a very exciting time for us and for Lumia products. You might have seen that in the last couple of months, we have already made some name changes to our apps to better reflect that these apps now come from Microsoft.

Our global and local websites are going through a transition as we speak and in the coming days our social channels will get a new name too – they will be called Microsoft Lumia. We would like to invite our Lumia fans to continue to follow us and always be up to speed with the latest device news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

This work continues across our devices, packaging and retail, to name a few. It’s all going as planned and we’re excited that our integration in to Microsoft continues to be on track.

Conversations: So when are we going to see the first Microsoft Lumia device?

Tuula: I wouldn’t comment on future product announcements, but what I can say is that that we are looking forward to unveiling a Microsoft Lumia device soon. This is of course a natural progression as all devices that once came from Nokia now come from Microsoft.

And, the Lumia promise of great phone experiences will remain the same as our customers have come to know and love. What’s more, Lumia phones will also showcase the best of Microsoft’s services such as Office, OneDrive, Skype and Bing to help customers with their work and personal lives.

Conversations: But does this mean Nokia Lumia smartphones that are currently in the market are obsolete?

Tuula: Of course not! Microsoft continues to sell and support the Nokia Lumia phones that are out in the market, such as the recently announced Lumia 830 and Lumia 730/735. As I said, the Lumia promise that you’ve come to experience and love will remain. We will continue to honor customer warranties and provide world-class care services as before.

Reassuring words from Tuula, pictured below, that what we have come to trust and expect in Lumia Windows Phones will still be present in future devices regardless of the company name. This is a short segment of the interview, you can read the entire thing by clicking HERE.

This morning saw the announcements by Microsoft of the Lumia 830, 735 and 730 at the #MoreLumia event in Berlin, Germany. As well as these new devices were also a host of cool new accessories such as the wireless charging case for the Lumia 735 (pictured above) and the new Microsoft Screen Sharing (pictured below) which allows you to project your screen in full HD. Other items include the DT-601, Nokia’s smallest wireless charging plate yet and the wireless charging flip shell for the Lumia 830.

CP-627

Here are some more details on each of them, with a summery from the Conversations blog;

Wireless Charging Flip Shell for Lumia 830 – CP-627

The CP-627 clips to the back of your smartphone and enables wireless charging. The soft microfiber lining of the flip protects your screen and keeps the screen clean.

Priced at 24,90€, you’ve got a choice of either dark grey, bright orange, or bright green.

Wireless Charging Shell for Lumia 735 – CC-3086

While the Lumia 735 don’t come with wireless charging built-in, that doesn’t mean it’s not possible to charge wirelessly. If you’d prefer a wireless charging option, you’ll want to get your hands on the Wireless Charging Shell. Colour options are dark grey, bright green and bright orange and cost €14.90

Nokia Wireless Charging Plate – DT-903

DT903

Qi compatible and BT LE supported, the DT-903 sits patiently until it’s needed, then gives off a subtle glow when it senses it’s time for a top-up. A blinking light is also emitted when you’ve received a missed call, SMS or email on your Lumia.

Available next month, the Nokia Smart Wireless Charger comes in white, bright orange and bright green, priced at $59 USD / 59€.

Microsoft Screen Sharing For Lumia Phones – HD-10

HD-101

No matter what you do on your Lumia, you’ll be able to see it in full HD (1080p)… While Microsoft Screen Sharing is connected to your screen via the HDMI cable and powered by Micro USB, it actually connects wirelessly to your Lumia. Simply tap your NFC-enabled Lumia against it and it’s instantly connected. HD-10 is priced at $79 USD / €79 and is available in white or black starting later this month.

You can find out more about all these accessories on the Conversations blog HERE.

Lumia-830-and-9301

The Conversations blog has posted a pretty comprehensive list of features coming with the Lumia Denim update aka Windows Phone 8.1.1, which will start rolling out first to flagship Lumia’s in Q4, as well as being available out the box on the newly announced Lumia 730 and 830.

Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1

• Cortana – The most personal digital assistant on the market will now be available in the UK and China as a Beta. India, Canada and Australia will have access to Cortana as a public Alpha. For US residents, Cortana now includes an improved natural language, car kit integration via Bluetooth for contacts, snooze reminders and calendar improvements.
• Live folders – If you prefer to keep your apps or games organised, you can now put them into folders. Simply press, hold and drag an app over another to create a new folder on the Start screen. Each folder can be renamed by tapping on the text field above the open folder.
• Apps Corner – Create a customised Start screen, where only specific apps or games are accessible. This could be particularly useful in the workplace if you’re issuing Windows Phones to employees.
• SMS merge and forwarding – Select individual text messages to either delete them out of a messaging thread, or to copy and past them into a new message in order to forward them.
• Snooze Times – It’s now possible to customise the snooze time within the Alarm app.
• Consumer VPN – Maintain privacy and security when using data while connected to public Wi-Fi hotspots or even with your home Wi-Fi.
• Mobile Web Site improvements in IE – Connect and browse even faster with improved downloading speeds on mobile websites.
• Store Live Tile (US only) – The Store Live Tile displays featured apps and games that are the most popular in the Store, or most relevant for you.

These following features will be exclusive to Lumia devices:

Lumia Camera – Replacing Nokia Camera, Lumia Camera is faster and more intuitive than before to make the best camera experience, even better.
• Speed – Pocket to capture speeds are superfast, and it only takes milliseconds going from shot to shot.
• Moment Capture – A long press of the camera button starts 4K-quality video recording at 24 FPS. With each frame at 8.3 megapixels, you can save individual frames as high quality still images.
• Rich Capture – Auto HDR and Dynamic Flash are now welcomed into the already-impressive feature set. Shoot first and adjust the camera settings later for that perfect photo.
• Improved image processing algorithms – Updated to give you clearer photos, even in lowlight.
• “Hey Cortana” Voice Activation – Gone are the days of pressing the microphone button to wake-up Cortana. Simply say “Hey Cortana” while the phone is idle and Cortana will activate. This is possible thanks to the SensorCore technology.
• Glance Screen – Compatible Lumia devices can now show more at a glance with Bing Weather, or Bing Health & Fitness data, in addition to time and date, notifications and application data.

Some very impressive features coming with the new update. Find out more on the Conversations blog HERE

Continuing their pursuit of photographing the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, National Geographic photographer Steven Alvarez has taken the new Lumia 930 along with the 1520 to Nepal to the peak of the Worlds highest mountain, Mount Everest.

According to the Conversations blog:

Following in the footsteps of Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, the first people to reach the summit of Mount Everest (8748m) 61 years ago, Stephen Alvarez embarked on an epic journey, trekking up to 5600 meters (18 500 feet), in intensely cold and challenging conditions.

During the 14-day high-altitude trek through snowstorms and freezing temperatures, the Lumia 1520 and Lumia 930 proved to be unstoppable, producing some pretty spectacular shots of one of the most dramatic and beautiful landscapes in the world.

The post brings us Stephen Alvarez’s photography tips for taking pictures in different weather conditions, as well as sharing the amazing pictures taken on both the Lumia 930 and 1520 during the ascent up the famous landmark. The video below also takes a look at the trip, which can also be found on Nokia’s YouTube channel.

Read more about Stephen Alvarez’s adventures with the two Lumia smartphones and their 20 megapixel cameras on the Conversations blog.
