Live caption option is available by pressing the “more,” or (+), button during a call and turning subtitles on. This can be set as a default, too.

The feature will be on auto-scroll by default. Users will be able to scroll through captions in a side window so that the texts don’t cascade. Live Caption on Skype will be available on  Android, iOS, Linux, Mac, and Windows, as well as Skype for Windows 10, although the roll-out might take a while. The company will also roll out translations for more than 20 languages in the coming weeks.

Whereas hardware like the Echo Show will also include video calling support for Skype.

Users can also use Skype to call landline or Mobile using SkypeOut. You can also call contacts by merely saying “Alexa, call Tom on Skype” to activate a call. Also, you are getting free 100 minutes of calling per month for two months when you link Skype with Alexa.

We have seen on Windows 10 and also on Xbox. Amazon also launched an Alexa app for Windows 10 recently. The partnership between both the entities is turning out to be beneficial for everyone.

Skype without highlights

Last year, Skype started revamping its interface by adding colorful Snapchat like makeover. It also introduced Highlights, its own version of stories, but finally ditching it now.

Skype’s redesign has met with a lot of backlash. Instead of revamping to a simpler UI, Skype cluttered its interface with a lot of features no one had asked for.

With Highlights, users were able to snap a photo or record a video, add Skype stickers, decorate it with text. This could be shared with other Skype users, groups or posted to the Highlights.

Skype thought that with rising popularity of stories through Instagram and Facebook, it’s something that all social apps would adopt. But it turned out to be disastrous as Skype is mostly used by enterprise and business users and not the Instagram generation of youths.

In its announcement, Microsoft admitted that the changes it had introduced weren’t working.

“Calling became harder to execute and Highlights didn’t resonate with a majority of users,” wrote Peter Skillman, Director of Design for Skype and Outlook.

Now, the app is introducing a simpler navigation model where there are now just three buttons at the bottom of the mobile app – Chats, Calls, and Contacts. Both Highlights and Capture are gone.

With the new desktop version of Skype, the company now says it’s moving the Chats, Calls, Contacts, and Notifications to the top left of the window to make it easier for long-time Skype users to understand.

The latest design is available in Skype version (8.29) for Android, iOS, OS X, Linux, and Windows 7, 8 & 8.1 operating systems.

Skype introduced the all new Skype 8.0 today, which comes with a variety of new features. Last year, Microsoft redesigned Skype which got mixed reviews. Skype 8.0 will replaces Skype 7.0 aka Skype Classic which will no longer function after September 1, 2018.

The new release introduces a variety of features, including HD video and screen-sharing in calls, support for @mentions in chats, a chat media gallery, file and media sharing up to 300 MB, and more. It will also add several more features this summer, including most notably, supported for encrypted audio calls, texts, and file sharing as well as built-in call recording.

The new update brings focus upon upgrading the visual elements of new design, like the color-coding in chat messages and “reaction” emojis. This release also included the chat media gallery and file sharing support, which are touted as new today, but may have already hit your desktop.

Skype is facing increased competition over the years from the likes of Apple’s FaceTime. Other apps for texting and calls, like Messenger and WhatsApp, and new communication apps for Business like Slack are doing good too. To compete better, Microsoft gave Skype a facelift starting last year. It introduced a number of social features seemingly aimed at a younger user base, including its own take on Stories.

Today’s desktop release focuses again on consumer-friendly features, with the added support of HD (1080px video) video calls which can include up to 24 people, as well as the Twitter-inspired @mentions.

Microsoft says Skype will add support for profile invites (to invite friends to join you on Skype), read receipts for messages, group links for chats and calls, and other features.

The most significant additions in Skype 8.0 includes an end-to-end encrypted experience where Skype audio calls, text messages, and shared files like images, audio and video, and secured with the industry standard Signal Protocol. Messages and notifications in these conversations will also be hidden in the chat list to keep the communication private.

Skype 8.0 will also soon roll out to iPad users with features like quoted messages, personalized themes, chat list, @mentions, and more.

Make sure you update your Skype app before September 1, 2018.

Microsoft has finally rolled a fluent design touch up for Skype app to Windows 10 users on release preview rings.

The Fluent Design can be seen on the messages list and the top menu bar. The reveal highlight is also present, making for an overall tasteful design iteration.

Microsoft also added some granular controls for Activity in Skype. You cannot see the “revamped” look of Skype just like we saw on Android, iOS, MacOS and Linux, which is basically everything except Microsoft’s own Windows.

Here’s the changelog:

Control your presence – Set your presence on Skype by going to your profile and selecting Active, Do not Disturb or Invisible

You can update Skype from Microsoft Store.

Cortana, already known for her deep integration in various Microsoft apps be it Outlook or Invoke or Band. The new update to Skype takes it a step further and adds Cortana integration to the app.

Microsoft announced Cortana integration for Skype back in 2016 at Build conference and its finally here. Cortana will help you with reminders, restaurant and movie suggestions, weather, and facts and even suggest responses to chat. Of course, you can also talk to Cortana like normal if you wish to. To access Cortana you need to tap Cortana icon in the chatbox.

Cortana under Skype is just a bot, hence main Cortana app isn’t required to be installed on your device. You can add Cortana bot to your Contacts through this link. The update is out for iOS, Android and Windows (Preview users) only, Windows 10 users might have to wait a little longer.

After launching the new Skype for Windows 7 and Max, the all new Skype comes to Linux too! There are no sights of the updated app for Windows 10, although they’re set to launch it in the next coming months.

Microsoft launched Skype Preview on Linux and you can straightaway download and enjoy the new app, reports OMG Ubuntu. The new look features bold fonts, a cleaner user interface, color transitions, and a user-interface that consistent across all of your devices, including your phone (not Windows Phones!!)

The Update is quite big, in terms of service and Microsoft is raking it in an entirely new direction, especially on Mobile phones. Microsoft will continue to refine their mobile app as the radical changes weren’t well received by the Mobile users.

“Skype Preview delivers most of the great features of our next generation mobile experience but is specifically designed with desktop in mind, to take full advantage of the larger screen. Skype Preview puts chat front and center—making this the most expressive Skype ever. You can also do more together in group calls, with real-time screen and photo sharing,” a Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement.

Since the new Skype is built on Electron, it’s cross-platform which means the Linux app looks and works almost exactly like it does on Windows or Mac. From the splash screen to the call feature, everything is exactly the same because of how the app has been developed using Electron.

If you are on Linux, you can try the all new Skype right now.

Recently, Microsoft revamped Skype’s look on Android and iOS and made it a bit Snapchattish in terms of design and user interface. Now, Microsoft is updating Skype for Windows 10 for Similar features. The improved design doesn’t bring a lot of new changes to the UI itself but it’s likely preparing for the new look of Skype.

Microsoft is discarding the hamburger menu in the app with the new update. The company has moved the profile picture, profile details, settings, and everything else that used to live in the hamburger to the header of the sidebar. When clicked on your profile picture, edit your profile details (your mood, bio, etc.) from the modal. From there, you can also access the Settings of the app which now loads in a modal and no longer looks bad on big displays. Well, these things doesn’t look bad on big displays anymore and various other things like the new chat window and number pad have also been moved to the new modal UI which actually works really well now.

Skype also gets a major update regarding sharing. Skype now integrates into the sharing system in Windows 10, meaning you can share anything from any app.

This update is available for Fast Ring Insiders for now. Update your app from the Windows Store.
