Vivo is one of those few companies which is trying some really cool concepts with their flagship phones. When the first Vivo Nex came last year, everyone was excited about its motorized madness. This year, they ditched all the mechanical stuff and even the front camera and went for a secondary display at the back.
As you can see, the back also has an unusual ring around the camera. Vivo calls it “Lunar Ring”. We’ll come back to that in a moment. Vivo has gone for a 12-megapixel primary camera backed with a 2-megapixel secondary module. There’s also a third f/1.3 lens paired with a time of flight (TOF) 3D module. The company says it helps to add point-to-point distance measuring and secure facial recognition to unlock the rear display. It can also be used for “personalized beautification.”
Coming to the Lunar Ring, it has both a decorative as well as functional use. The ring can show you notifications by changing to a different color. It can also glow softly to create diffused lighting for low-lit selfie shots. You can even set it to pulse along with the song you are playing.
The display, or rather the displays, are quite impressive on the new Vivo Nex. The front has a 6.4-inches, 2340 x 1080 OLED panel. On the back, there’s a smaller 5.5-inch 16:9 1080p OLED panel. The back panel can also be used to operate the phone normally, as you would do at the front.
The internal specs include Snapdragon 845, 10GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage. For those who are curious, there’s a headphone jack as well. A 3,500 mAh battery keeps this phone juiced up.
Vivo hasn’t yet announced pricing or availability for the Nex Dual Display Edition outside of China, where it’ll go on sale on December 29th for 4,998 yuan, or about $725.
