Kirin 980 Announced, comes with more AI features

Today at IFA 2018, Huawei CEO unveiled the upcoming new generation Kirin Processor. The new Kirin 980 will be the next generation smartphone processor. This processor has 7nm architecture, based on TSMC fabrication technology.

This new processor packs a lot of new features onboard, including New GPU, CPU and NPU. Also, they say that the processor packs a massive 6.8 billion transistors onboard.

This Kirin 980 packs the ARM’s latest cores. The high-performance cores include Cortex-A76, whereas Cortex-A55 for low power cores. Huawei uses ARM’s new technology, called DynamIQ technology, which allows you to squeeze all eight cores into a single cluster.

The SoC, however, may not feature 5G technology, as for now, not many markets have 5G.

Huawei continues to add their SoC’s internal cores. They say that they have used two high-performance Cortex-A76 cores, whereas two high-efficiency Cortex-A76. The rest four cores are low power cores, Cortex-A55.

Huawei, last year released their first processor with a dedicated NPU onboard. This time, the Kirin 980 features double the AI powers from its predecessor.

This time, Huawei has used two NPUs in the processor. This means there will be more AI powers in the processor. Here, image recognition has a major leap to 4,500 images per minute. It can now also pull information from the real-time video streaming as well.

The new Image Sensing Processor or the ISP can support multiple information processing from multiple cameras at once.

A New Mate series with Kirin 980 might launch in October this year.
