Amazon announced the Fire TV Cube on Thursday. It’s basically a Fire TV with a speaker and the Alexa smart assistant built-in. Amazon hasn’t done this before.
The Fire TV Cube connects to your TV and can provide up to 4K UHD content from Amazon Prime services, Hulu, Netflix and other apps. It also serves as an Echo speaker, which means you can do things like call across the room to check the weather, turn on the lights, order things from Amazon or call a friend.
So rather than killing the cable box, Amazon aims to embrace it. Officially announced today, the new Amazon Fire Cube TV is your cable box’s best friend, while bringing complete Alexa functionality to your entire home theater setup. Plug it in and you can start your TV, cable box, sound bar, and A/V receiver with just a simple voice command: “Alexa, turn on the TV.”
Along with the universal remote, Fire TV Cube combines Fire Stick and Amazon Echo into a single device. The device has a similar mic as in other Echo devices so it can accept voice commands easily. The Fire TV Cube supports HDR10 and Dolby Atmos but lacks Dolby Vision.
The Fire TV Cube is scheduled to begin shipping on June 21 for $120. But today and tomorrow only, you can pre-order it for $90 — that’s $30 off. But don’t delay: The discount ends Friday, June 8 at 11:59 p.m. ET, 8:59 p.m. PT.
