Special Edition of Google Assistant coming soon for features phones

At the Google for India event, which was held on Tuesday at New Delhi, Google announced they’ve developed a lightweight version of Google Assistant for Feature Phones. Reliance’s JioPhone will be the first one to receive the Google Assistant.

Google has come up with a customized version of Google Assistant for the Indian market which will support Hindi and English languages. It’ll be optimized for low-resolution devices, but the core functionality will remain the same. Through voice commands, it’ll be able to deliver search results, play music and send a text message.

However, this isn’t the first digital assistant to be available for JioPhone. JioPhone, which runs on KaiOS ( forked from Firefox OS ), already comes preinstalled with HelloJio. Google Assitant will be just another digital assistant but making use of Google’s AI capabilities it might prove to be even better than HelloJio.

“Whether in entry-level smartphones or Jio Phone, Google Assistant can help you call, text, play music and videos, and access other apps.”, said Gummi Hafsteinsson, Product Management Director at Google.

Google only showcased a demo of the software at the event and didn’t go into more specific details about the software. It unknown whether it’ll be available is regional languages and whether it’ll arrive on other feature phones too. The release date is also unknown, but we expect it to be in the first quarter of 2018.

Stay tuned for further updates.
