Share more on Twitter with new 280 character limit
Twitter is famous for its 140 character limited tweets which based of 160 character SMS limit. From often than not we find ourselves trying to squeeze as much as possible in those 140 characters, and Twitter is aware of this problem.
Twitter has increased its character limit to 280 characters, exactly double the previous limit. Twitter’s CEO Jack Dorsey announced the news on Twitter in the following tweet:
This is a small change, but a big move for us. 140 was an arbitrary choice based on the 160 character SMS limit. Proud of how thoughtful the team has been in solving a real problem people have when trying to tweet. And at the same time maintaining our brevity, speed, and essence! https://t.co/TuHj51MsTu

This new feature is only trial and only few chosen Twiiter celebrity users can use it right now. Twitter is yet to confirm if other users will get to have this limit extension in future.
Meanwhile, if you want to try this out, Dev folks at Twitter have figured out a way to do so by executing a script of your own in your browser. There’s a script that forcefully enables cramming of Tweet’s character limit to 280. The script was written by Prof9 so all credits to him. To do so, follow these steps:
- Download Tampermonkey for your browser of choice (Chrome webstore link).
- Visit this this Github repository, click the “raw” button, then tell tampermonkey to “install” the script (or copy and paste the code into a new script in Tampermonkey).
- Now visit twitter.com, make sure the script in running in Tampermonkey, then tweet away.
