CES 2017: Snapdragon 835 the new flagship SoC by Qualcomm

On the day-1 of CES, one of the big announcement was by Qualcomm. They officially announced a new processor Snapdragon 835 (whose specs were leaked a week ago) along with full specs and supported devices. Interestingly enough, the first devices to be powered by this new processor aren’t mobiles phones but AR SmartGlass devices by ODG.

With an advanced 10-nanometer design, the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 835 processor can support phenomenal mobile performance. It is 35% smaller and uses 25% less power than previous designs, and is engineered to  deliver exceptionally long battery life, lifelike VR and AR experiences, cutting-edge camera capabilities and Gigabit Class download speeds.

The new processor is the successor to Snapdragon 820 and packs major improvements. Some of its key features are:

  • Size : The chip is only 10nm in size, making it incredibly fast in terms of computing.
  • Connectivity : It comes with LTE category 16 ( x16 downlink ) which could deliver data transfer rates up to 1 Gbps, making it 10x more faster than first generation 4G LTE. Latest WiFi standards, Bluetooth 5.0 supported.
  • CPU : Packed with the Octacore Qualcomm Kryo 280 CPU,the most power efficient CPU by Qualcomm. Its CPU has 64-bit based architecture and is clocked at 2.45GHz.
  • GPU : Has in-built Qualcomm Adreno 540 GPU, provides 25% faster graphics rendering and 60x more color displays. Supports Vulkan, OpenGL, OpenCl and DX12.
  • Camera and Video : Camera to support 32 MP single camera ( 16 MP for dual camera ). Has Qualcomm Spectra 180 image sensor processor for zero shutter-lag photo capturing. As for video, it support recording videos at 4k resolution @30fps and 4k playback @60fps.
  • Charging : Supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 4 technology, which claims to provide 27% higher performance while consuming 40% less power than Snapdragon 821.

The company is yet to announce the list of mobile devices which will run on Snapdragon 835, but we could expect to see those mobile devices to be out by mid-2017. Since it is suitable for Laptops, Mobile and Tablets, we can also expect to see a new device by Microsoft running on this processor later this year.
