This Thursday is said to be the day when non-insider will finally get Windows 10 Mobile
Quite a while ago Microsoft started the Windows Insider Program to give enthusiast the ability to test pre-release software on their PC’s, tablets and phones. This should have helped Microsoft to improve their operating systems in both ways, bugs as well as new feature can be submitted by participants of this program. What started as a program fro enthusiasts and developers is now a more thing to get the latest software version, at least on the phone. For PC’s and tablets Windows 10 has been successfully rolled out already, though on the phone there is no sign of the OS, until now.
Back in October 2015 the company has announced two new flagship devices, the Microsoft Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL as well as another low-end device. Today we do have even more choice when it comes to Windows 10 Mobile devices. Microsoft has released the Lumia 650 and also some third-party manufacturers have release a few phones which are shipped with Microsoft’s latest operating system. I am still using a Nokia Lumia 930 and well of course I am a member of the Windows Insider program but what about all the other Lumia 930 users? Windows 10 Mobile is still not available for current phone running Windows Phone 8.1 although it should have been released back in December last year.
The thing is that Microsoft has completely overhauled the mobile version of Windows, actually they are building this up from scratch in order to implement the Windows 10 kernel. That is not an easy job and you can see that if you are heaving a look in the tech news from time to time. There has not been an official announcement from Microsoft when they are going to release the OS since they probably are not quite sure when they are ready to release it. I can understand that, it just takes it’s time to build such an OS however at least they should talk to us. According to a new rumor we can expect Windows 10 Mobile to be available for devices running Windows Phone 8.1 starting with March 17th, which would be this upcoming Thursday.
The rumor comes from someone at the ITHome Forum and according to this leakster Windows 10 Mobile will not be rolled out to all devices on Thursday. Microsoft released a list of eligible devices earlier already, however, the rumored one does not quite match with the official one. Here is what phones are said to get the official update: Lumia 535, 636, 638, 640, 640 XL, 830, 930, and 1520; The list does include the most popular phones, though the Lumia 1520 does only have Windows Phone 8 allows some speculation about the availability of the upgrade for other Windows Phone 8 devices.
For now we can just hope that Microsoft will finally roll out the official Windows 10 Mobile upgrade on Thursday. Though you shouldn’t get too excited, one the one hand because carriers still have to approve the initial Windows 10 update, on the other hand the company will probably roll out the update in waves so you might not be able to download the update on day one.
