Beautiful back covers coming for the Lumia 950/950XL
When the first leaks appeared of the Lumia 950 and the larger Lumia 950XL this summer, there was a palpable sense of disappointment among those who tweet about and write about Windows Phone. Of course people were over the moon that Microsoft was making good on their promise of new flagships, but the designs of these phones did not seem exactly awe-inspiring at the time. The last flagship, the Lumia 930/Icon was mostly heralded as a beautiful phone, a mixture of smooth metals and soft poly-carbonates. The upcoming Lumias did not instill a sense of excitement really.
Fast-forward to this week, and with Microsoft officially launching the two 950 pones, a lot of anxiety has been abated via those who have managed to get their hands on them for a little fondle. I attended Microsoft’s “fan party” on Tuesday, and I was able to play with the phones and speak at length with the camera-guru Juha Alakarhu, from the Nokia 808 and Lumia 1020 fame. The phones are incredibly lightweight and lovely to hold, dispersing my fears that they were going to be boring slabs of efficient circuitry and without beauty. I am glad I was wrong to fear them; they are gorgeous in the flesh.
However, the Lumia 640XL is what they reminded me of most. Not that that is a bad thing, but without that sexy metal band around the edges (like on the Lumia 930/Icon) they didn’t seem quite premium enough in the same world as the iPhone 6s and Samsung GS6 Edge. Still gorgeous, but lacking that all-important element of je ne sais quoi.
But then, we were given new options, and exciting ones at that. Enter, MOZO accessories from Finland.
This company has teamed up with Microsoft to be an official partner; they will soon be launching special back-plates for both the Lumia 950 and the 950XL that (like the 640XL) cover not only the back but the edges too. Interestingly, the NFC and Qi wireless-charging capabilities of the original back-plates will be continued inside the Mozo ones, so the only thing you’ll lose really, is the Microsoft logo. Oh, what a shame! haha
Personally, I’m torn between the gorgeous black leather with metal trim (which may just be poly-carbonate with a metal finish) and the bold red, which reminds me of my good ol’ Nokia 808. I’ll more-than-likely opt for the leather one. I always did like that leather back of my wife’s old BlackBerry Bold back in the day…
Go and visit their webpage over at mozoaccessories.com or have a look on their Instagram account for more photos and information. Exact pricing is unknown as of yet, but expect to pay around $60 for a back-plate.
I’m excited for a new Lumia 950XL with a back leather back (or sexy bold red one!) – which one are you going for, or are you happy with Microsoft’s own version?
