How To: Fix Windows 10 to be able to update to latest Windows Insider Preview Build

At the beginning of the Windows Insider thing, Neowin had posted some instructions on how to tweak the registry in order to get unreleased Windows 10 Insider Preview Builds. However in fact they where then displayed in Windows Update and Windows tried to download them but it was not possible to actually install and try them. Now this tweak is causing some problems because Windows can not install regular Insider Preview versions anymore. Neowin did post some instructions how to revert this tweak in order to get new Builds but it seems as this has not seen everyone yet so here we go again.

As you can see at the tweet below, also Gabriel Aul is taking care of this problem. In response to a tweet of someone who has experienced a problem with updating from Build 10122 to Build 10130 he suggested to visit the Microsoft Support Website where he has posted a method which might be the solution for the problem with updating. There he is saying the following:

This is happening because the client is asking WU for a build that it doesn’t have permission to get. In many cases this was because people at one point tried to tweak their registry to get internal builds (which didn’t work but left them in a sometimes broken state.)

So here is the solution from Gabriel Aul which should help you to be able to update to the latest version of the Windows 10 Insider Preview Build:

  1. Registry:
Open the registry editor and navigate to the following path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost\Applicability
    fbl_impressive
  2. BranchName:
Locate BranchName and make sure it shows: FBL_IMPRESSIVE. If it doesn’t, change it.
  3. ThresholdRiskLevel:
Locate ThresholdRiskLevel and change it to: low
  4. ThresholdInternal:
    Find ThresholdInternal and delete it
  5. ThresholdOptedIn:
    Find ThresholdOptedIn and delete it

Furthermore Gabriel is saying, that when you have finished the above shown steps you have to go to Windows Updates and in settings you will have to select the ‘Fast Ring’ again. Afterwards you can check for updates again which should now bring you the ability to successfully update to the latest Windows Insider Preview.

Currently this Build is only available for the Fast Ring which means there is no ISO available so far which makes it possible to do a clean installation. However according to Gabriel Aul the Build is on a good way to be released also for the Slow Ring. Builds which have been released for the Slow Ring are usually also available as an ISO. So it is not possible to do a clean installation for now but with a bit more patience it might be possible soon.

Let me know in comments below if this could solve the update problem for you. Stay tuned for more tutorials and latest updates for the Windows 10 Insider Preview for Phones, Tablets and Desktop PC’s.
