Microsoft isn’t giving up on Windows Mobile – it’s betting their ENTIRE future on it!

Not too long ago the latest numbers came out for Windows Mobile device usage, and while there were pockets of hope worldwide, the numbers were not that good.  Also, recently Microsoft announced it would make fewer devices and (in its infinite wisdom) it has chosen to make the flagship of flagships, the Lumia 950XL, only available for sale (for now) through the Microsoft Stores. So fewer devices for sale and fewer places to actually buy them?  Really, Microsoft? Is that how we are planning to grow market share? It seems like Microsoft has given up on the mobile space as we know it, and they have….

Going by the numbers it’s that Google has and will continue to dominate the mobile phone industry for a long time (like Symbian used too) and there is NOTHING Microsoft can do to stop it, so why even bother trying?  Microsoft figured that out and honestly stopped trying.  Even Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stated that they built the Lumia 950 for Windows Phone fans.  So what heck is Microsoft thinking?  What is the plan?

The plan is the next big thing beyond smartphones…it is Continuum!  I know that Continuum just seems like a parlor trick right now but it is the future of computing.  In fact all of Microsoft future success will be based on Windows Mobile devices. Stick with me here…..

PC and tablet sales have steadily been dropping for years now because more and more people are doing more and more things with their smartphones. What is Microsoft’s mainstay business? The personal computer market…they dominate the PC market by a HUGE margin, but the future isn’t PC it’s smartphones, which sounds awful for Microsoft but it isn’t.  With Continuum (and Windows 10) Microsoft has found a way to keep themselves in the dominating position for the foreseeable future.

In fact according to Satya Nadella himself in an interview stated:

“When we define mobile in the marketplace, we don’t think of it by today’s market share positions on a given form factor. Devices and device sizes will come and go, even within a single year, you will be changing multiple phones. It’s more about the mobility….”

In the foreseeable future, consumers will not be looking for a PC or a tablet or a smartphone; they will be looking for all those things in one, and that’s what Microsoft is poised to deliver.  An all in one experience with their devices and only Microsoft has the technology – combined with the Windows Operating system – that most consumers want when they are using a PC.  This is the new watershed moment for mobile devices.  The Lumia 950 is what the iPhone was to the mobile phone market 8 years ago.

Microsoft didn’t “give up” on mobile devices. No, no, no it doubled down on them.  While Google and Apple are slugging it out to be king of the mobile space as we know it, Microsoft is hard at work redefining what a smartphone is and what it does.  Last time the mobile space really changed was 2007. Now in 2015, Microsoft is poised to not only change the mobile market but also the tablet and PC market as well.  All we have to now is sit back and watch for the revolution in computing that Windows 10 Mobile will create.
